Spanish sculptor, born in Barcelona into an impoverished family. He attended evening classes in drawing but had no formal training in sculpture. From 1901 to 1910 he lived in Paris, where he was a member of Picasso's circle and was noted for his high spirits. In 1910 (with a contract from Kahnweiler) he moved to the Pyrenean village of Céret, near the border with Spain, then in 1927, following a severe attack of multiple arthritis, he settled in Caldas de Mombuy in Catalonia, a village renowned for its thermal waters. After the arthritis attack he had to give up stonecarving, and his work consisted mainly of small bronzes, including nudes in a style similar to that of Maillol and reliefs on traditional Spanish themes—bullfighting, flamenco dancing, and so on. He had a considerable reputation in the 1920s and 1930s, now somewhat faded.
