Anthony Crowley
(contemporary American printmaker and painter)
American
Anthony Crowley earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Colorado State University in 1975 and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1980. He began his teaching career at Tarkio College in Missouri, moving to Grinnell College in Iowa in 1989. After thirteen years of service at Grinnell, Crowley became Chair of the Department of Art at Wayne State University and joined Illinois State University as Director of the School of Art in 2007. In his studio work, Crowley uses music and poetry as sources for visual images, translating the structure, pattern, texture, and color imbedded in these other art forms into drawings, prints, and paintings. His most recent works explore syncrisis, a concept in which strongly contrasting elements are evident in the same literary work, object, or event. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the United States, in Canada, and Japan. Among the institutions that include Crowley’s work in their permanent collections are the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, the Cedar Rapids Art Museum, the New Orleans Art Museum, the Harwell Art Museum, the Kemper Group, the Maytag Foundation and numerous colleges and universities.
