American, (ca. 1860–1926)
Born in Philadelphia, Joseph Pennell was an etcher and printmaker who was a close friend of James Whistler. He wrote an authorized biography of Whistler, published in 1908, and emulated many of Whistler's artistic techniques. He spent much of his life in Europe, but returned to America to live in New York in 1917 during World War One. During the early twentieth century, he traveled across much of Europe and America, including the Panama Canal, creating many images depicting the new, industrial side of urban life. - Spencer Wigmore '11
