Leader of the modern literary movement in South America, Jorge Luis Borges published his first work, a book of poems, in 1923. This was followed by other poems and essays on metaphysics and language. By 1955 he was totally blind and had turned to writing short fictional narratives on esoteric themes reflecting his irony and skepticism.
