This print was made during an outing on the Thames in Sunbury, a southern suburb of London, with Whistler accompanied by Haden and French painter and etcher Henri Fantin-Latour. Over the course of his long career, Whistler frequently worked en plein-air quickly capturing a scene by drawing directly on a copper plate.
