A Venetian Palazzo, a conventional vignette-shaped tourist print, contrasts starkly with the more abstract Whistler Nocturne of the same subject. Pennell’s love for Venice took him to all parts of the city, and he did not hold himself to one style of depiction. This work could easily be an illustration for a 19th century travel guide of Venice, depicting the scene from the viewpoint of a tourist floating down the canal. During the late 19th century, commercial demand remained high for traditional etchings focusing on well-known tourist locations in Venice, and many artists, including John Taylor Arms, produced such works. - Spencer Wigmore '11
