Miriam Schapiro is a leading artist and feminist. In 1971 with fellow artist Judy Chicago, Schapiro founded the Feminist Art Program at the newly opened California Institute of Arts (CalArts). This program encouraged collaboration, fostered research into women artists of the past and focused attention on traditional "women’s" techniques and formats. Schapiro own art celebrates women’s achievements. This colorful print invokes the practical arts -- especially fan painting and quilting. With an easy wit, Schapiro honors handicrafts, too long dismissed as mere "women’s work."
