From the Hyakkunin Isshu (One Hundred Poems as Told by a Wetnurse). This example dates back to the early Meiji period. One Hundred Poems (Hyakkunin Isshu), an important anthology of Japanese court poetry compiled in 1235, was illustrated by Hokusai beginning in his 76th year and first publishd in 1835. This plate illustrates an 11th century poem about the arrival of Autumn.
