Shigenobu was the son-in-law and student of the famous landscapist, Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858). After Hiroshige’s death, he assumed his father-in-law’s name, completing and publishing numerous unfinished designs the elder artist was working on at the time of his death. He also created original prints closely adhering to his father-in-law’s style. This scenic view of women washing newly woven cloth in the Chofu river is closely related to a print from a series with the same title by Hiroshige dated 1835. Hiroshige II’s use of a less flattened, more ‘Western’ perspective is a notable departure from his teacher’s style and underscores the rapid changes which were taking place in Japan during his life.
