In 1863, the 14th Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi (1846-1866) travelled from Edo to Kyoto to pay his respects to the emperor. Numerous prints were published to commemorate this journey., including this from a series by multiple prominent artists. Hakone is a midway fortified checkpoint on the Tokaido.
