She was a fairy tale,
her name whispered gently
in my ear during bedtime stories.
She entered my playground with
princes and castle walls,
talking panthers and singing bears.
I longed to touch her
to smell her scent
to eat her sweetly spiced popudums,
to run alongside elephants and hear
them smile.
One night she came to me in my
dreams
inviting me to walk along her shores
and witness her red moons.
Delight overtook me and
I jumped from bed to bed
until I crossed the Atlantic
and landed in her lap.
She was my first love.
Her name was India.
