St. Paul's New York pictures the conflict between the new and old worlds of the city during a time of rapid change in both Europe and America. The edifice under construction appears to be the Woolworth Building, rising above St. Paul's Chapel or the new technologies and designs of the Woolworth Building?

St. Paul's New York is the only work in the exhibition of an American subject. Few American Etching Revival artists treated their own country in the 19th century. By the early 20th century, though, American cities - especially New York - attracted artists inspired by the excitement of new construction and the burgeoning artistic community.

This work was purchased on the recommendation of a student curator enrolled in the Whistler circles seminar. - Spencer Wigmore '11
