Manolo, a friend of Picasso and a fellow Spaniard, approached the human figure in a fairly traditional manner. As this work demonstrates, Manolo retained a classical sense of the nude, even while providing a “modern” gloss through simplified form. The Young Catalan has no visible ethnic or regional identifiers beyond the title. Manolo, though, is perhaps best known for his traditional Spanish themes, including bullfighters, Catalan villagers in traditional dress, and dancers. In addition to his sculptural work in bronze, terra cotta and stone, Manolo produced lively drawings and colorful paintings.
