Legros was a French painter, etcher and sculptor. In 1863 he moved to London, becoming an influential art teacher. This etching is part of a series representing artists. Dalou (1838-1902) was a sculptor of large-scale monuments and smaller, more spontaneous works.

- British - Refers to the culture of the modern nation of the United Kingdom. It also refers to the cultures of historical nations that had Great Britain as the central ruling power, or to the culture of the ancient Britons, who were those tribes that spoke the Celtic (Brythonic) language.
- drypoint (printing process) - Intaglio process in which a sharp needle scratches the plate creating a burr that yields a characteristically soft and velvety line in the final print.

- etching (printing process) - Intaglio process in which the design is worked into an acid-resistant substance coating the metal printing plate; the plate is then exposed to acid, which etches the plate where the metal is exposed, to create lines and dark areas.
