Like John Taylor Arms, Louis Rosenberg was trained as an architect. Rosenberg created prints of both European and American subjects. The Gate of Justice, Alhambra depicts the fatade of a major Moorish monument in Granada, Spain. As a tourist destination, Spain was seen as particularly exotic in part because of its Islamic past. Rosenberg’s print shows the fatade of the fortress, highlighting the Islamic-style keyhole shape of the doors and in the striped decoration around the doors. Constructed in the fourteenth century, the Alhambra is a complex of palaces that had been home to Muslim rulers. The buildings, afflicted by fires, had fallen into disrepair in the nineteenth century. However, despite the neglect and perhaps because of it, the Alhambra possessed a mystical quality in the eyes of the British. Richard Ford, who published A Handbook for Travelers in Spain (1845), wrote, "The baying of a dog and the tinkling of a guitar, indicating life there, increase the fascination of the Alhambra."
