- ancient - In the discipline of art history, typically refers to the period in Europe, Asia Minor, and north Africa, prior to the fall of the western Roman Empire. The term is also sometimes applied more generally to prehistory and to early cultures in other areas of the world.
- Chinese - Describes works created by the people of the same name living in China.
- cong - Late Neolithic Chinese jade tube form that has a squared exterior surface and a round hollow interior. They are usually decorated at the corners with facial features, sometimes abbreviated to concentric circles or eye-like shapes, and embellished with incised horizontal bars on the planar surfaces. Found at burial sites, their purpose remains unknown.
- decorative arts - Refers to works that are primarily utilitarian in form or function, but that have aesthetic value provided by the design, decoration, or embellishment. They may include ceramics, furniture, and other household or utilitarian objects. They are distinct from "fine arts," which were traditionally considered to require more extensive training and were restricted to the media of painting, sculpture, drawing, and architecture.
- jade (rock) - Hard, fine-grained rock composed either of jadeite or nephrite and usually having a color ranging from dark green to green-white. Jade takes a high polish and has been used since prehistoric times for jewelry, small utensils, carvings, vases, and other ornamental objects. Some processing techniques have been used to enhance the color of inferior stones: B-jade has been bleached to remove brown stains, while C-jade has been impregnated with resins to increase its translucency; A-jade is untreated.
- jades (objects) - Collectively, the class of sculptures, containers, and other objects and artifacts carved in jade. When possible, use the material term plus a more specific object name, such as "jade" + "figurines."
- Neolithic - Refers to the final stage of Stone Age development of a human culture, characterized by sophisticated stone tools created by polishing or grinding, wide-spread domestication of animals and plants, settlement in permanent villages, and the appearance of pottery and weaving. Neolithic cultures first appeared during the Holocene Epoch, around 9,000 BCE, and survived in certain remote areas of the world into the 19th century. Artistic products include wooden and stone houses, religious monuments, fortifications, carvings, paintings, textiles, and pottery.
- nephrite - An exceptionally tough, compact, fine-grained greenish or bluish mixture of actinolite and tremolite; it is a calcium magnesium silicate with traces of chromium and nickel, which produces its color. With jadeite, it is one of two minerals commonly called "jade." Nephrite has an oily, lustrous appearance when polished and is sometimes variegated in color that can incorporate white, yellow, brown, gray, and black. Nephrite has been used since Neolithic times for small utensils, decorative carvings and jewelry. When heated to about 1025 C, nephrite changes mineral forms to diopside.
- sculpture (visual work) - Works of art in which images and forms are produced in relief, in intaglio, or in the round. It refers especially to those objects that retain the quality of being tangible objects or groups of objects. It refers particularly to art works created by carving or engraving a hard material, by molding or casting a malleable material, or by assembling parts to create a three-dimensional object. It is typically used to refer to large or medium-sized objects made of stone, wood, bronze, or another metal. Small objects are typically referred to as "carvings." As works become more diffused in space or time, or less tangible, use specific terms, such as "mail art" or "environmental art."
