Kiyochika is regarded as one of the great masters of Japanese print-making during the Meiji period (1868-1912). He studied western drawing and painting techniques with Charles Wirgman (1832-1891), an expatriate English artist and cartoonist who contributed to the London Illustrated News and founded the first Japanese periodical magazine, the satirical Japan Punch. In addition, Kiyochika later studied traditional japanese painting with the renowned eccentric artist Kawanabe Gyosai (1831-1889).
