George Bernard Shaw was the most significant British playwright to emerge since the seventeenth century. His plays include Major Barbara, Pygmalion, Saint Joan, and Arms and the Man. Exercising a barbed wit, Shaw was an idealistic and iconoclastic theorist in social, moral, and literary issues.
