Green calligraphic inscription reads: "So many, are the links upon which the true philosophy depends, of which, if one be loose or weak, the whole chain is in danger of being dissolved; it is to begin with Hands and Eyes, and to proceed through the memory, to be continued by reason; nor is it to stop there; but to come to the Hands and Eyes again" Robert Hooke, Micrographia, 1665. Shahn treated the image of the blind botanist in several graphic works.

- American - Refers to the context of or associated specifically with the modern political entity of the United States of America.
- Contemporary - Refers to painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and architecture dating from the recent past and present. It differs from modern art in that the term 'contemporary art' does not carry the implication of a non-traditional style, but instead refers only to the time period in which the work was created. - screen printing - Printing by forcing ink or dye through a mesh on which a design has been formed by stopping out certain areas.
- screen prints - Prints made by exclusively using the process of screen printing, whether originated by hand or photographically.
