Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) was born in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada and attended Niagara College in Welland and Ryerson Polytechnical University in Toronto where he achieved a B.A. in Photographic Arts. He works in Toronto Image Works, a photography and imaging studio.
Burtynsky frequently photographs railcuts, mines, and homesteads, focusing on human use or abuse of land. A common motif in his work is comparison between the natural and altered states of the environment. As he shows the viewer the damage done by human encroachment on the natural world or the exploitation of the land, he also reveals his own aesthetic appreciation for the visual results. Through his photographs of polluted and iridescent lakes and carefully torn up mountain faces the viewer can see the beauty of the natural world even in its destruction and decay.
