- American - Refers to the context of or associated specifically with the modern political entity of the United States of America.
- Contemporary - Refers to painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and architecture dating from the recent past and present. It differs from modern art in that the term 'contemporary art' does not carry the implication of a non-traditional style, but instead refers only to the time period in which the work was created. 'Modern' and 'contemporary' are inherently fluid terms. The term 'contemporary' is sometimes more narrowly used to refer to art from ca. 1960 or 1970 up to the present.
- decorative arts - Refers to works that are primarily utilitarian in form or function, but that have aesthetic value provided by the design, decoration, or embellishment. They may include ceramics, furniture, and other household or utilitarian objects. They are distinct from "fine arts," which were traditionally considered to require more extensive training and were restricted to the media of painting, sculpture, drawing, and architecture.
- folding screens - Refers to screens comprised of two or more panels, typically decorated and often lacquered. Invented by the Chinese, the form was mentioned as early as the 2nd century BCE. The earliest surviving examples date to the MIng dynasty. Folding screens were introduced to Japan from China in the 8th century; such screens were often designed in pairs in Japan. From the early 17th century eastern folding screens were imported to Europe and the form was soon adopted by European craftsmen. European folding screens, like those of Japan, were usually composed of six panels but were often taller and more substantial.
- plywood - Wood board consisting of a number of thin layers of rotary-cut veneers glued together so that the grain of each layer is at right angles to the grain of the adjacent layer.
- screens (furniture) - Refers to furniture in the form of an upright partition that can be used to embellish, partition, shelter, and provide privacy. Screens are often highly decorated.
- sculpture (visual work) - Works of art in which images and forms are produced in relief, in intaglio, or in the round. It refers especially to those objects that retain the quality of being tangible objects or groups of objects. It refers particularly to art works created by carving or engraving a hard material, by molding or casting a malleable material, or by assembling parts to create a three-dimensional object. It is typically used to refer to large or medium-sized objects made of stone, wood, bronze, or another metal. Small objects are typically referred to as "carvings." As works become more diffused in space or time, or less tangible, use specific terms, such as "mail art" or "environmental art."
