Best known for his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), Gabriel Garcia Marquez received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. An early practitioner of 'magic realism,' characteristic of much contemporary South American literature, he has also been a newspaper reporter and foreign correspondent in South America, Europe, and the United States. Died April 2014, Mexico City.
