Francis Dodd pursueed his interest in art at the Galsgow School of Art and in 1904, moved to London, where he worked as a painter, printmaker, and served as Trustee of the Tate Gallery (1928-35). Over the active years of his career (1907-1938), Dodd produced over two hundred etchings and drypoints, mostly of architectural subjects or portraits. Leon depicts the side exterior of a French Romanesque and Gothic hybrid cathedral. In this print, which recalls the aesthetic attitudes of John Taylor Arms, the architecture looms large, dwarfing the people and diminishing landscape to a few insignificant strokes.
