Minneapolis artist Mike Lynch creates poetic imagery out of the least likely settings, such as grain elevators and industrial loading docks. The romance of these scenes is heightened by his use of nocturnal or early dawn light.
This painting is one of about 15 pieces given to Carleton by Mary Lamp, a fan of Lynch's who collected his works and wanted to give them to an education institution. They are not grand finished pieces, but rather smaller, more ephemeral works. Some of them are actually torn out of a sketchpad and still have the ring binder residue along the edge. Lynch's virtuosity is shown here—he creates an illusion of three dimensions by using gray paper and then adding white for highlights and dark for shadows.

- American - Refers to the context of or associated specifically with the modern political entity of the United States of America.
- Contemporary - Refers to painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and architecture dating from the recent past and present. It differs from modern art in that the term 'contemporary art' does not carry the implication of a non-traditional style, but instead refers only to the time period in which the work was created. 'Modern' and 'contemporary' are inherently fluid terms. The term 'contemporary' is sometimes more narrowly used to refer to art from ca. 1960 or 1970 up to the present.
- drawing (image-making) - Producing visible forms primarily by delineation, usually by the direct application of material or instrument to the surface of the support.
- drawings (visual works) - Visual works produced by drawing, which is the application of lines on a surface, often paper, by using a pencil, pen, chalk, or some other tracing instrument to focus on the delineation of form rather than the application of color. This term is often defined broadly to refer to computer-generated images as well.
- gouache (water-base paint) - Opaque water-based paint, usually composed of pigment in gum arabic plus a white material that increases opacity. It may be used for heightening works in aquarelle or for whole paintings. The term originally probably had a different meaning, referring to oil applied on top of tempera painting.
- gouaches (paintings) - Watercolors, which are considered either drawings or paintings, using gouache, which is opaque color that is ground in water and mixed with gum and honey.
- ink - A fluid medium used for drawings or tracings. An opaque, usually black, pigment is mixed with a vehicle such as water to produce a fluid which can be applied with a pen or stylus. Through the end of the 19th century, ink was supplied dried in stick or block form which was ground and mixed with water as needed. At the beginning of this century prepared ink became popular.
- ink washes - Transparent layers or washes applied to a drawing, either with ink or watercolor, in order to create an atmospheric effect.
- paper (fiber product) - Refers generally to all types of matted or felted sheets or webs of fiber formed and dried on a fine screen from a pulpy water suspension. The fibers may be animal, such as hair, silk or wool, or mineral, such as asbestos, or synthetic. However most paper is made from cellulosic plant fiber, such as from wood pulp, grass, cotton, linen, and straw.
- pen-and-wash drawings - Drawings made using a pen, then embellished with transparent washes of ink or watercolor to create an atmospheric effect.
- watercolor (paint) - A transparent aqueous based paint produced by mixing ground pigments with water and, generally, gum arabic. Aqueous based paints made with vegetable gum binders were used by Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artists for wall paintings. Japanese and Chinese painters extensively used watercolor paints on silk panels and delicate paper scrolls. In the 16th through18th century, watercolor paints were used for miniature illustrations on porcelain, ivory, cards, books and manuscripts. By the 18th and early 19th centuries, watercolors rapidly increased in popularity due to the availability of small cakes of watercolor paints in metal pans, usually applied to a paper support by using a brush.
