Joseph Pennell was a close friend of Whistler. He and his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell, wrote several books about Whistler and his art. A printmaker and draughtsman, Pennell not only made prints as independent artworks, but also created illustrations for books and magazines. Pennell wrote, "You should be prouder to illustrate the greatest magazines of the world, thus appealing to millions of readers, than to have your drawings buried in the portfolios of a few hundred collectors."
"Puy le Dome - France" was created for a magazine illustration in 1892. Puy le Dome is an area in central France that takes its name from a volcano which was formerly a site of pilgrimage. While Whistler looked down on illustration as a secondary art, Pennell felt strongly about its merits. In his book, "Adventures of an Illustrator" (1925), he wrote, "I believed, as I do now, that illustration is a most serious, a most important form of art...Really, though, all art is illustration and always has been from the beginning of time." - Spencer Wigmore '11

- American - Refers to the context of or associated specifically with the modern political entity of the United States of America.
