Cathedrals were both popular tourist destinations and favorite subjects for the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century etchers. Albany Howarth’s Rochester Cathedral, West Door depicts what the 1910 Baedeker’s guide to Great Britain refers to as ôa building of considerable interest.ö The 12th century cathedral underwent several renovations, including repairs to the West Doorway in 1893. Through contrasts of light and dark Rochester Cathedral, West Door draws the viewer’s eye into the cathedral where Howarth articulates the interior features, including people, with a series of short lines.
