McBey’s earliest etchings have been categorized by art historians as "unsentimental yet romantic." His later works show a more linear, agressive approach. McBey ominated the generation of etchers left behind by Whistler and Haden and his prints are considered to have been the most expensive and valuable prints of the 1920s. McBey’s Isle of Ely recalls Rembrandt in the sketchy line quality and compositional experimentation.
