Vlaminck, along with Matisse, was labelled a "Fauve" (wild beast) for his use of strident color in 1905. By the 1920s, Vlaminck had settled into the expressionistic landscape style embodied in the Carleton picture.
This luminous watercolor came from the estate of Elizabeth Wallace, identified in institutional records as a "friend" of the college. Indeed Wallace was gifted in her friendships, including ties to author Mark Twain and to Laurence Gould, Carleton President between 1945 and 1962. Carleton awarded Professor Wallace (University of Chicago, Romance Languages) an honorary degree in 1949.
