Daubigny was an associate of the Barbizon School, a group of mid-nineteenth century French painters, and was a forceful advocate of painting, drawing and printmaking outdoors (en plein-air). The seven prints by this artist in the Carleton College Collection include a mythological landscape and several livestock subjects. Tree with Crows is possibly Daubigny's best known print. The dark, deeply bitten lines contribute to the desolate mood of this deep landscape, empty except for a few bare trees and hovering crows.
