The Inro was worn on a belt as an accessory. Pictured on the Netsuke is Daruma, the monk who brought Buddhism to Japan. In order to avoid falling asleep during meditation, Daruma cut off his eyelids.

- decorative arts - Refers to works that are primarily utilitarian in form or function, but that have aesthetic value provided by the design, decoration, or embellishment. They may include ceramics, furniture, and other household or utilitarian objects. They are distinct from "fine arts," which were traditionally considered to require more extensive training and were restricted to the media of painting, sculpture, drawing, and architecture.
- ivory (tooth component) - The modified form of dentine found on the tusks of mature elephants, also used generally as the material from any tusked or large-toothed mammal such as a walrus or narwhal.
- Japanese
- lacquer (coating) - Term applied broadly to paint or varnish that dries with a high gloss, to coating made from shellac, or to any coating that dries by the evaporation of solvent. In most lacquers resin is dissolved in a volatile solvent or a drying oil and hardens by evaporation.
- lacquerware - Objects, usually made of thin wood, that are coated and decorated with layers of lacquer, often accompanied by inlays of other substances such as mother-of-pearl and metal.
- ojime - Small sliding beads that were used to suspend the inro, tobacco pouches and money purses from the wearer's belt. These beads were made out of a variety of materials such as glass, bone, wood, lacquer, jade and ivory. They sometimes featured intricate carved designs or were carved into the shape of animals or human figures.
- sculpture (visual work) - Works of art in which images and forms are produced in relief, in intaglio, or in the round. It refers especially to those objects that retain the quality of being tangible objects or groups of objects. It refers particularly to art works created by carving or engraving a hard material, by molding or casting a malleable material, or by assembling parts to create a three-dimensional object. It is typically used to refer to large or medium-sized objects made of stone, wood, bronze, or another metal. Small objects are typically referred to as "carvings." As works become more diffused in space or time, or less tangible, use specific terms, such as "mail art" or "environmental art."
- silk (fiber) - Fine continuous protein fiber consisting primarily of fibroin filaments, secreted by silk caterpillars.
- silk (textile) - Textile made from silk fiber, which is a fiber derived from the cocoon of the silkworm moth.
