Sometimes called Washington D.C.’s preeminent artist, Sam Gilliam has spent a long productive career experimenting with color, materials, and process. Initially associated with the Washington Color School in the 1960s, this artist has more recently begun to work between two and three dimensions with collage/print pieces such as this Untitled, and with large sculptural reliefs employing all manner of materials including polypropylene, computer-generated images, hand-made paper, aluminum, steel, and plastic.

Published by College Art Association to benefit Professional Development Fellowships; the artist produced Untitled at the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper (renamed the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions in 2006), working closely with the master printer, Eileen N. Foti, and the master papermaker, Gail Deery.

20th Century
American - Refers to the context of or associated specifically with the modern political entity of the United States of America.
collage (technique) - Refers to the technique of making compositions in two dimensions or very low relief by gluing paper, fabrics, photographs, or other materials onto a flat surface. If heavy three-dimensional objects dominate, see "assemblage (sculpture technique)." If the constituent fragments form a somewhat unified image, see "montage."
collages (visual works) - Refers to works produced by the technique of collage. If photographs dominate the composition, use "photocollages."
Contemporary - Refers to painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and architecture dating from the recent past and present. It differs from modern art in that the term 'contemporary art' does not carry the implication of a non-traditional style, but instead refers only to the time period in which the work was created. 'Modern' and 'contemporary' are inherently fluid terms. The term 'contemporary' is sometimes more narrowly used to refer to art from ca. 1960 or 1970 up to the present.
Japanese paper (handmade paper) - Refers to various types of oriental handmade paper, particularly strong, handmade paper composed of long bast fibers such as the paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera), the gampi (Wikstroemia canascens) and the mitsumata (Edgeworthia papyrifera). Thin, translucent sheets of Japanese paper are often used as a reinforcing paper and hinges because of their strength, flexibility, and permanence. Specifically for paperlike material made from the pith of the rice paper tree, use "rice paper."

paper (fiber product) - Refers generally to all types of matted or felted sheets or webs of fiber formed and dried on a fine screen from a pulpy water suspension. The fibers may be animal, such as hair, silk or wool, or mineral, such as asbestos, or synthetic. However most paper is made from cellulosic plant fiber, such as from wood pulp, grass, cotton, linen, and straw.
prints (visual works) - Pictorial works produced by transferring images by means of a matrix such as a plate, block, or screen, using any of various printing processes. When emphasizing the individual printed image, use "impressions." Avoid the controversial expression "original prints," except in reference to discussions of the expression's use. If prints are neither "reproductive prints" nor "popular prints," use just "prints." With regard to photographs, see "photographic prints"; for types of reproductions of technical drawings and documents, see terms found under "reprographic copies."
relief compound prints - Refers to color relief prints where the printing surface has been taken apart for separate inking and then reassembled for printing.
