Pennell depicts Venice as a "floating city" simplifying the architecture into simple geometric shapes depicted across a high horizon line, seemingly floating across an empty expanse of water suggested by nothing more than a few lines and washes of ink. Pennell depicted venice in many forms and themes, ranging from this nearly abstract composition to more traditional scenes of the city. Works like "Venice, Italy" and "A Venetian Palazzo" show Pennell's great versatility in both subject matter and technique. - Spencer Wigmore '11
