Village Scene, Anticoli, painted in 1927, depicts the small town of Anticoli-Corrado in Italy where Sterne lived several times. He said that he painted this work because he simply looked out his window, noticed that there was a performance occurring, and he decided to paint it. Sterne said, "It is not what one paints but how. It is not how one feels but what. This as I see and feel it is important."

Village Scene, Anticoli was given to Carleton College by William Benton, alum and former trustee of the College. This painting is one of ten paintings in the College Collection from the Encyclopaedia Britannica Collection of Contemporary American Painting.
