The legend of the Bonhomme Misère is a French folk tale. The only valuable possesion of the peasant, Misère, is a pear tree. He gives lodging one night to two mysterious travelers, Peter and Paul. In return for his hospitality, the strangers grant a gift of enchantment; whomever climbs into the pear tree will be stuck. When Death approaches, the old man talks him into the tree, where Death is forced to stay. Thus Misère (misery or poverty) remains forever among the living.

- British - Refers to the culture of the modern nation of the United Kingdom. It also refers to the cultures of historical nations that had Great Britain as the central ruling power, or to the culture of the ancient Britons, who were those tribes that spoke the Celtic (Brythonic) language.
- etching (printing process) - Intaglio process in which the design is worked into an acid-resistant substance coating the metal printing plate; the plate is then exposed to acid, which etches the plate where the metal is exposed, to create lines and dark areas. For the single step of exposing the plate to acid, use "biting."
- etchings (prints) - Prints made from an etched printing plate, which is a metal plate on which a design is made by coating the plate with an acid-resistant substance, creating a design in the coating, and then exposing the plate to acid, which etches the plate where the metal is exposed. For designs incised directly into a copper plate using a burin or graver, use "engravings (prints)."
