As a poet and critic, Pound championed the work of contemporaries such as T. S. Eliot and William Carlos Williams. A guiding spirit of Imagism, Pound began his epic work The Cantos in 1917. He was confined to a mental hospital for twelve years following his arrest for pro-Fascist radio broadcasts he made during World War II.
